ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

Orthopaedic surgery is a branch of surgery concerning the osteo-articular and teno-musculo-ligamentous system.

Within this specialisation, there are surgeries aimed at repairing pathological processes of traumatic origin (fractures, ruptures, dislocations), such as ligament reconstructions (like the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee), synthesis of bone fractures using plates, screws, intramedullary nails (internal fixation), or external fixators.

Another interesting field is the correction of severe pathologies that expose the limb to a risk of amputation, such as the presence of a tumour requiring salvage surgery or the use of orthopaedic braces and prostheses.

Today, specific problems are classified for each breed, which may involve hereditary transmission or predisposition. In some cases, genetic tests on DNA allow for early diagnosis and the possibility of selecting breeding animals.
