The neurological signs that may manifest in your pet are numerous and varied (continuous drooling, tremors, stiffness, collapsing, involuntary release of faeces and urine, change in character, difficulty or refusal to jump, sudden weakness, loss of limb function, back pain, head tilt, etc.).
The causes that provoke them can actually be in the nervous system (in the brain, spinal cord, nerves of the limbs, etc.) or in another organ, located in the chest or abdomen.
Lack of oxygenation to the brain, lowering of blood sugar levels, toxic substances reaching the brain due to ingestion or passing into the bloodstream from a malfunctioning liver or inefficient kidneys, for example, can cause neurological signs very similar to the previous ones and indistinguishable during a simple examination.
Knowledge of neurological diseases in dogs and cats has enormously increased in the last two decades, so nebulous diagnoses of not too distant times have been replaced by precise diagnostic algorithms capable of recognising numerous previously unknown pathologies.
These scientific advances allow us to positively manage a good number of patients who were once considered incurable.
The advent of advanced imaging diagnostic techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging has revolutionised our way of working because it allows us to "see" what is happening inside the nervous system, such as in the brain or spinal cord.
